13w5d: Annual checkup and scan

Today's scan went well. I didn't get a picture to take home, but I got a good, but brief peak at our little girl. Got to hear her heartbeat (LOVE THAT!) and see her squirming in there. Most prominent feature: her backbone!

Had my pap test and breast exam, too. All my blood work came back normal.
Next OB scan is scheduled for 4 weeks, Thanksgiving week (that will be 17 weeks). I have already scheduled our 20 week scan at the parinatologist (better u/s machine). I'm looking forward to a more leisurely, detailed view, with measurements.

This woman at the office yesterday overheard someone I'm close to say, "Congratulations!" The woman then yelled, "What are you being congratulated for, Jem?" I answered, "I won the lottery." and then distracted her with a question. I didn't feel like spilling the bean, as she's a major gossip. I'll tell her eventually, but not now.

Question: How have you handled indelicate questions?

Yay for normal! I can't believe how quick you're moving along in your pregnancy! So super exciting! I love your little fruit ticker thing too. Cute! I probably would've answered the question the same way as you did to your nosey co-worker. Simple answers like "I won the lottery" usually nips things in the bud. Sometimes, anyway. You don't have to share with anyone until you're ready! ;)

A girl with a strong backbone is always a good thing! ;)

Thanks for stopping by and giving me support the other day, I really needed it! :) I'm glad things are going well for you. I've wondered about the telling and if things continue with me I am going to keep it quiet as long as I possibly can! I did have someone yell out - "Are you pregnant" when I didn't drink at a party last weekend and instead of saying I was the designated driver which was the party line I had planned, I got a deer in the headlights look that gave me away. I was truly shocked by the question. Luckily no one heard her and I gave her some shit for yelling out such an indelicate question and swore her to secrecy.

You already know your baby's gender? That's awesome that you found out this soon! I'm happy everything came back normal. Normal is good. And about the question, i'd probably react the same. I advice everyone to not share the news of their pregnancy until they're fully comfortable. For some that's when they're 4 weeks pregnant, for others that's when they reach the 12 week mark. So I think it's good that you didn't spill the beans!

Congrats on another great appointment!

I didn't come out at work until 17+ weeks, and not until a coworker asked me point-blank. There are still people at work who are just now finding out (I'm 22w now) Meh, I just let people wonder if I needed to lay off the breakfast burritos, and now the belly is mostly speaking for itself.

So glad you had another great appointment! Looking forward to hearing about more great appts!

As for the indelicate questions... a lot of the time, I'd flat out say, "I'm not comfortable talking about that" when I got a really rude one.

For instance, a number of people were obsessed about my weight gain during pregnancy. When asked "how much weight have you gained??" I'd say "Enough. The doctor says I'm doing great and that's good enough for me." If they pressed - and people did, wtf? I don't ask them how much they've gained over the past year - I'd go to "I'm not comfortable talking about it" or smile and repeat the "Enough" phrase and walk away.

Sounds like you already have a terrific answer to the nosey lady - that made me giggle. :)
