Outrageous Fertile comment of the month (updated)

Yesterday, office birthday bash. I'm cutting the cake. A woman, who I thought was my friend, is giving me hard time about how I'm cutting the cake. I rib her back until this comment:

Her: "You don't know how to cut cake, you don't have any kids."

Me: Really?

Inside I'm thinking, "Thanks for rubbing it in, be-atch. I told you we are working on it. Thank you soooooooooo much!"

***

Other fertility horror story: I seem to have roped myself into hosting a friend's baby shower on Saturday. The woman who was supposed to host has the flu and bad. Last weekend I casually volunteered to host if she didn't feel better in time. Unfortunately, she's not feeling better. That will learn me for being nice.

What have I done?!!!!!!! I must be insane!!!!!!!!!

BTW, anyone have any good baby shower games that aren't too inane or demeaning? I really, really need your help here!

Jem

Update:

Thanks for all the excellent ideas. My first instinct was "no games, but I think I will include some sort of game because it's a group of women who gather regularly to play games (Bananagrams, Boggle, Scrabble, etc.). I really like the ideas from Classy Chaos that lis suggested. Who doesn't like Mad Libs?!

I also think it will be good for me to have some sort of activity I can concentrate on that won't have me fixating on this woman's baby bump.

Only one of my friends IRL who will be there know about our TTC and ART. I'd like to keep it that way.

Good news: My HCG is down to 28 and I've been given the green light to drink 2 weeks after my MTX injection, which will be Saturday! I've never had Bourbon Slush, but it sounds divine. I haven't met a bottle of Bourbon I haven't like - big fan of the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan...

I'm a fan of the 'baby poop giveaway.' ou take as many diapers as there are people, and then either tape them under the chairs, or (I prefer) pass them around (to music or whatever). Whomever ends up with the 'poopy' one (smear chocolate or peanut butter or whatever in it) wins a prize. It's funny, and you get out a little agression 'making poopy', hahaha.

Well, I've always been fond of the candy bar/diaper game. Buy a bunch of different candy bars, cut a piece off of each one, melt it into a newborn sized diaper, make the guests guess what kind of candy bar it was by the melted mess in the diaper. Use about 10 different candy bars, whoever gets the most right, wins. It almost always results in hilarity.

Yesterday must have been jerky fertile comment day, because I got one, too. I have a baby shower this weekend, too. I so do NOT want to go, but it's for my sister in law so I have to. I am making the cake.

I cannot get over that woman. How completely & utterly insensitive especially because she knows what you're going through. Geez. Seriously??? Makes me cringe.

As for the baby shower, I'll see if I can email you a 'score card' that I made for a friend of mine. I like baby taboo, where you put up words like 'cute' 'great' 'useful' 'awww' and then people have to 'pay' 25 cents or whatever amount per time that they say these words during gift opening and the money goes toward 'sending the baby to college'...

What an inconsiderate comment! OMG, what are people thinking? The answer is that they aren't thinking. I'm sorry you had to endure such stupidity.

I like a word scramble for baby showers. Maybe like 10 to 15 words (dealing with labor, delivery, babies in general) that they can work on while eating cake or something. It's pretty tame and shouldn't embarrass anyone. I went to one where you weren't allowed to cross your arms or legs and you had to give up your raffle ticket to whoever caught you so that they could have another chance at winning the grand prize.

You don't have to have games...!!!!! And the easiest is to ask the guest of honor what she wants to do, because most of them don't want to play them.

I would have said something to the co-worker who knows you're "working on it".

Just because you have kids doesn't make you an expert in anything, even cake cutting.

What the hell is wrong with people?!

People. Sheesh. Next, you don't know how to drive a car because you don't have kids. Or, you don't know how to eat because you don't have kids...or, you don't know how to live because you don't have kids.

I'm with the no games approach. =)

Baby shower game idea...not sure if there is enough time to pull it off...ask all the attendees to email you or give you a baby/toddler picture of themselves. Put pics on a posterboard and give each pic a number. Put everyone's names on a paper handout and tell people to select which numbered picture is which. Pretty fun to see people guessing!

Sorry to hear your rude co-workers comment. People just don't think!

Another vote for no games, and I am really feeling for you! Ugh.

I cannot for the life of me understand where she got off making a comment like that to you. How could that be seen as funny under ANY circumstances? That was so inappropriate of her!

I, for one, seriously dislike baby showers and especially so if silly games are involved. Why oh why do there have to be games AT ALL? We are not children playing pin the tail on a donkey. Couldn't a nice luncheon and present opening session suffice?

I vote for no games. And I might have considered stabbing her with the cake knife. Seriously -- wtf gets into people?

I really detest the shower games, so a shower without games (and maybe some champers for all the non-pregnant people there) sounds good to me. Good luck!

And cake is an equal-opportunity food - so back off lady. Grrrr....

Gosh! I'm so sorry. Those words mean nothing to those that say them but they cut like knives.

i would have turned around and punched her in the face. seriously i probably would have said nothing and then later in the day thought of a million nasty retorts that i could have said. what. a. bitch.

As a fertile person, I apologize for my people.

As a person who's thrown a baby shower or two, I suggest no games but serve a tasty bourbon slush instead. The guests will love it and the infertile in you can laugh on the inside as the pregnant people look longingly at the punchbowl. Seriously, baby showers are more fun for everyone when alcohol is involved.

UGH! She sounds like my neighbor who offered me their extra infant swing. Ummm...no thanks.

No advice on the baby shower, but a shot of Gin beforehand might be helpful. LOL!

Good luck Saturday!

I am interested in knowing what happened AFTER you punched her square in her ugly face? :)

Was all ready to post but LOVE other comments, esp from "The Mom" - so just ditto me on her comments and many of others. The alcohol at the baby shower bit is brilliant.

Cutting cake? Seriously? Do fertiles think they are the masters of the universe. 'Ah, yes, those without children could never master such a difficult task of cake cutting...adults NEVER eat cake'....bitch.

Ew. Shower games. Sorry....even as 'one with upcoming shower' planned, I have requested NO games. I am no help.

Priscilla said...

I'm with Murgdan!! She said it perfectly!! What a BITCH!!! I would have smashed a piece of "poorly cut cake" in her face!!!

I can't believe you have to host this shower...you are so strong (and too nice!!) I don't have any game ideas....actually maybe I do....why don't you organize some drinking games!!! I'm kidding....sort of.

I hope that you enjoy a few drinks throughout the shower to take the edge off. I know I would if I were you. Good luck, Chica!!!!

Ugh. That comment is stupid and thoughtless. What a witch!

I'll be thinking of you during the baby shower. I've avoided them for over three years; I can't imagine hosting one. You are brave and giving.

All the best!

Every time I read about baby showers I am so glad that they haven't caught on here in the UK. I don't think I could cope.

As for your expert cake cutter. She said that and she KNEW you are trying. Incredible.

great idea on the games! I love those kind of games too! & enjoy your bourbon! :)

Good luck with the baby shower! I hope it is somewhat fun for you.

I also appreciate you posting those comments. We could fill an entire blog with those type of comments alone!

That comment was horrible and so insensitive!

Dont stress about shower games, most people are fine as long as they have wine or champagne.

PS- I just left you two awards on my blog!

I think my jaw dropped when I read the cake comment. Are you serious? What a brat!!!!! And I didn't know you had to have kids to know how to cut cake. I have none and am perfectly adept at cake cutting. Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!
